IP switching in a simplified ATM environment

چکیده
Key issues in the current development of Internet seem to be its capability to scale and to support new real-time or near realtime applications like videoand audio conferencing. There are two factors that affect these qualities: one is the ability to distinguish which connections should be switched and the other is the effective control over network resources. ATM is a serious attempt to standardize global multiservice networks. This attempt seems to suit well for the future Internet. ATM was originally meant to be an easy and an efficient protocol but it is now turning to be ‘yet another ISDN’. More and more features are implemented to ATM resulting in the overloading of the network with management procedures. Therefore a new approach needs to be taken. In this approach a strong reminder of ‘what is necessary’ needs to be kept in mind. This paper presents an alternative, simpler approach to the ATM traffic management and introduces some suggestions how to map Internet applications to simplified ATM environment using an advanced IP switching concept.

Multicast for RSVP switching: An extended multicast model with QoS for label swapping in an IP over ATM environment
The ubiquity of IP associated with the acknowledgment of ATM as a key switching technology has motivated an increasing interest towards the design of a more eecient way of operating IP over ATM networks. This approach is known under the name Label Swapping. A few studies have addressed the primary issue of providing simultaneously quality of service and multicast. We propose a solution where we...
متن کاملReliable Services in MPLS
ince the Internet was opened to commercial traffic in 1992, it has grown rapidly from an experimental research network to an extensive public data network. Demand is pushing the capabilities of today's Internet in several dimensions: transmission bandwidth, number of hosts, geographic size, and traffic volume. At the same time, the Internet is evolving from best-effort service toward an integra...
متن کاملFlow Labelled IP: Connectionless ATM Under IP
IP traffic on the Internet and private enterprise networks has been growing exponentially for some time. This growth is beginning to stress the traditional, processor based design of current day routers. Switching technology offers much higher aggregate bandwidth but presently only offers a bridging solution. Various proposals are under way to support IP routing over ATM switching technology; h...
متن کاملA Signalling Interworking Solution for Heterogeneous Networking
IP based networking is seen to take the major role in the ongoing network and service converge process. However, a number of other networking solutions exist and it is anticipated that the future services will be carried to users over a diverse set of networks. This implies the need for interworking between the different network concepts and especially interworking between different signalling ...

The Calypso project aims at developing an extremely exible control and service architecture for ATM-based broadband networks. This architecture provides various alternatives to distribute the network and service control functions among clients, servers and diierent network nodes. This means that a control or service function can reside not only in a network node, but in the customer's workstati...
